- A not-for-profit and a registered charity, TVO is Ontario’s public educational media organization and a trusted source of interactive educational content that informs, inspires, and stimulates curiosity and thought.
- Scope:
- The focus of this role is to leverage TVO’s trusted reputation and elevate its profile among external stakeholder groups including the Minister of Education, Ontario MPPs, CRTC decision-makers, the broadcast industry, TVO supporters, media, educators and Ontario community leaders.
- The successful candidate is a seasoned communications manager with a passion for the important role public educational media can play as a vehicle for citizen engagement in the digital age. He / she is comfortable working hand in hand with senior leadership on matters of the utmost strategic importance requiring knowledge of highly confidential information. He / she will manage a Senior Information Officer(s), focusing on corporate PR and writing.
- Responsibilities include:
- CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS:
- With the VP, provide communications counsel to the CEO, Executive and Board on confidential matters of corporate positioning including but not limited to: labour relations, government relations, Board relations, regulatory processes, confidential financial issues and other matters of a confidential and/or sensitive nature
- Draft messaging and communications including reports, presentations, briefing notes, background documents, Q & As, letters and other corporate positioning documents related to the above areas of responsibility
- Review and approve CEO communications written by other members of the organization to ensure a consistent voice and write for the CEO and the Chair of the Board of Directors as requested or needed
- Identify speaking opportunities for the CEO and Board Chair that highlight TVO’s ambitions with respect to citizen engagement, innovation and growth; philanthropy; value for money and other strategic levers
- Manage and participate in the writing and production of corporate documents such as the TVO Annual Report, the TVO Strategic Agenda, The Educational Blueprint for TVOKids and the annual TVO holiday card (working with the Corporate Senior Information officer, the Marketing team and others).
- GOVERNMENT AND STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS:
- Provide support/preparation for CEO meetings with the Minister of Education, Premier’s Office, Deputy Minister and other Ontario Government officials or for appearances before government committees as applicable
- Deliver a new targeted stakeholder relations stratetgy for MPPs, TVO friends and allies, funders, the education community, Ontario community leaders, Regional Councillors etc.
- Oversee the strategy and creation of stakeholder vehicles including targeted e-blasts from the CEO and special DVD compilations.
- Working with the Philanthropy team, leverage stakeholder communications to support the donations strategy.
- Provide a leadership role in corporate events, launches and campaigns involving key stakeholders.
- Work with the Regional Councillor Liaison to develop effective community relations campaigns around key organizational initiatives.
REGULATORY:
- Active invovlement in CRTC-related regulatory inquiries, hearings and processes, including presentations by the CEO in both her TVO and ATEC (Association of Tele-Education in Canada) roles
- Serve as the key contact person with the CRTC for public complaints and interventions related to license applications (e.g. tvokids+).
“ABOUT TVO” CORPORATE WEBSITE:
With the re-launch of tvo.org in the fall of 2010 the About TVO corporate site will become a more significant vehicle for corporate communications
Oversee the creation, development and placement of multi-format web content (text, photo, video) to highlight TVO’s key messages: Examples include stakeholder messages from the CEO; speeches and presentations; stories on community events, partnerships, launches and awards; impact statistics; profiles on TVO people
Identify strategies to extend the corporate brand beyond the corporate website via social media.
Ensure documents are posted on the site per regulatory requirements: e.g. Annual reports, quarterly expense disclosure, accessibility standards for customer service.
CORPORATE MEDIA RELATIONS/ PR:
Provide leadership to the Corporate Senior Information Officer in securing media coverage on topics such as: TVO’s 40th anniversary (fall 2010); the launch of the public archive (fall 2010), our educational role in the media space, the public value we deliver, our need for philanthropic support, TVO as a digital innovator and other strategic themes for the organization (media for TVO’s programming is handled in a separate division).
Advise VP and CEO on media issues as required
Serve as alternate TVO corporate spokesperson.
SUPERVISORY/ LEADERSHIP:
The successful candidate will be a member of TVO’s management team.
He/she will have one direct report, a Senior Information Officer.
Qualifications:
Minimum requirements include a degree in Communications, Public Relations or Journalism, or similar experience
Minimum seven years experience working in a communications and PR environments, including management role(s)
Experience in the broadcast industry and/or the not-for-profit sector and/or the public sector all of interest
Experience working closely with senior leadership on highly strategic organizational positioning and issues management
Demonstrated strategic communications planning experience
Outstanding writing and communications skills a must
Experience managing media relations including spokesperson role
Advanced knowledge of corporate communications strategies in the digital age
Ontario Government relations experience a definite asset
Experience working in a unionized environment a definite asset
Project management and event planning experience
Diplomacy and discretion essential.
