Scope:
The focus will be on corporate public relations and communications.

The successful candidate is a seasoned PR practitioner with established press relationships, excellent writing skills and a passion for the important role public educational media can play as a vehicle for citizen engagement.

Responsibilities include:

MEDIA RELATIONS:

• With the Manager, develop an annual corporate media relations plan, including a “feature” strategy, focused on elevating TVO’s profile vis-a-vis these key messages:
• Only TVO aligns all of its children’s content with Ontario’s elementary school curriculum to prepare kids for classroom learning
• TVO engages people in the important political, economic, environmental and social issues that are shaping Ontario
• TVO is an innovator in using multiplatform digital media to support learning in Ontario
• TVO provides exceptional value to the people of Ontario
• With the support of donors, TVO can further increase its impact

Foster relationships with traditional and online journalists including in the following areas: education, parenting and lifestyle, Ontario political affairs, ethno-cultural diversity, the media industry; technology as well as Ontario-wide daily and community media
Implement PR plans, including for example TVO’s 40th anniversary celebrations (currently in development)
Work collaboratively with the Program Publicity/Marketing team
Write and disseminate releases, pitch stories and pursue leads
Develop and maintain targeted media lists including online media and bloggers
Seek and write feature articles for external publications
As assigned, under the direction of the manager, draft corporate media responses (including letters to editor, Op Ed pieces)
Track and measure the effectiveness of corporate PR initiatives.

CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS:

• Under the direction of the Manager and in collaboration with the Philanthropy team, draft stories for the About TVO corporate website (re-launching in November 2010) that support TVO’s key messages
• Where assigned, draft other website content including updated Board, Regional Councilor, employee profiles and corporate announcements

Also, under the direction of the Manager, draft content for corporate communications vehicles including:
TVO’s annual report
Updates to the Strategic Agenda and the Educational Blueprint for TVOKids
Stakeholder e-blasts and DVDs
New corporate collateral materials (fact sheets, brochures, Holiday cards)

Qualifications:

• Degree in Communications or similar experience; Minimum 5-7 years’ experience working in the PR and communications field
• Proven track record in securing positive media coverage including feature stories
• Demonstrated experience in developing PR plans
• Established relationships with journalists in the areas of media, entertainment, education, philanthropy, diversity a definite asset
• Keen interest in social media and experience in online media relations and blogger relations
• Demonstrated experience writing for the web
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, and a proven ability to work under pressure and under tight deadlines
• Self-starter, strong team player and relationship builder
• Proficient in all Microsoft office programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
